One evening, Mr. Tanaka, a neighbor, came by with the neighborhood association dues. My husband decided to have a quick drink with him, so they started having a nightcap together. It turns out his elderly mother had moved into a facility in the next town, leaving him living alone as a single man, and he was finding daily life quite difficult.
