Movie Information:
“Oshima” ends up staying with his son and daughter-in-law, who live in Tokyo. However, “Sumire,” the wife of his son “Tetsugaku,” is unfriendly and always has a sour expression, so Oshima has long found her difficult to deal with. One day, “Tetsugaku” gets injured and ends up in the hospital. In the awkward situation of being alone with her, Oshima, out of mischief, tells Sumire a joke that’s anything but funny: “My son died in the hospital…” Suddenly, “Sumire”—who was usually expressionless—gave him a look of utter shock, as if her eyes were about to pop out of her head. Surprised by her reaction, “Oshima” became curious to see more of her funny faces and began pulling pranks designed to startle her, but she remained as surly as ever.
